Britain’s got issues

A day doesn’t pass without individuals, pressure groups and organisations seeking to raise awareness of an issue that vexes them. The fight for share of voice could be about to get even tougher following the launch of the Government’s Your Freedom website. The initiative announced by Nick Clegg asks the public to put forward suggestions of which “unnecessary laws” should be repealed.

Queen’s Speech 2010

The coalition Government announced 24 Bills in its first Queen’s Speech – which had ‘freedom, fairness and responsibility’ as its central message. It was a high number, but this Parliament is due to run for 18 months and will also sit in September (providing it wins a vote on this).  The Queen said that her Government’s first priority would be to ‘reduce the deficit and restore economic growth’.

Gordon Brown resigns

In the last few minutes, Gordon Brown MP announced that he was going to Buckingham Palace to ask the Queen to accept his resignation as Prime Minister.
To applause from the Downing Street and Labour staff, he joined his wife Sarah and for the first time in front of the cameras, his two small children, for the journey to Buckingham Palace.
He said that Labour had left the UK ‘more prosperous and just’.
He added that he had strived ‘to serve, to do my best’.
 In an emotional passage, he praised tribute to the UK’s armed forces, saying ‘I always admire the courage I have seen in our armed services.’
